We call this a pleural tap or thoracocentesis:<\/em><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"h.p_mfhAVycXw3jc\" class=\"zfr3Q duRjpb\">Patient information for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary <a class=\"dhtgD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aberdeenlungs.com\/whos-who\/pleural-diseases-team\">Pleural Clinic<\/a><\/h1>\n<p id=\"h.p_usXXbJZ-wggx\" class=\"zfr3Q\">1. You have been referred to the Respiratory Pleural clinic in Aberdeen as your chest x-ray has shown fluid around your lungs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h.p_iIgtab9Xwggy\" class=\"zfr3Q\">2. <strong><u>Your appointment details are attached in the accompanying letter<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h.p_F7fDndi-wggz\" class=\"zfr3Q\">3. <strong>If you are on blood thinning medication (warfarin, ticagrelor, rivaroxaban, apixaban), please contact <a class=\"dhtgD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aberdeenlungs.com\/whos-who\/secretarial-team\">Diane Mitchell<\/a> (Respiratory secretary) on 01224 551214 for further instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"h.p_lC6UKP0uwgg0\" class=\"zfr3Q\">Please bring an overnight bag as you may need to stay on the ward after tests. We suggest that you bring someone to drive you home.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h.p_K06mGzdExlp6\" class=\"zfr3Q\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>What happens in clinic?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR\">\n<li id=\"h.p_Tkx_7pkkwgg2\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You will be assessed by a respiratory doctor<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_SDgKUXNuwgg2\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You may require an ultrasound scan\/sonogram (similar to a baby scan or heart scan) of your chest<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_zqXzUrwLwgg3\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You may require drainage of the fluid and a biopsy of the lining of your lungs. This will be discussed with you at clinic.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_Sdjd3CL_wgg7\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">The procedure is performed with local anaesthetic.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_agnAg1Tqwgg8\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You will be asked to sign a consent form for the test.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_HIZHBLyLwgg8\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You can usually go home afterwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"h.p_RTWYiKAfwgg8\" class=\"zfr3Q\"><strong>5.<\/strong> <strong>What happens after the clinic or test?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR\">\n<li id=\"h.p_HDHxRseWwgg-\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You may need an x-ray after drainage or biopsy<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_Aj0a7wgqwgg-\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">If you are feeling well, you will be able to go home.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_hu-ldKTowgg-\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You may have a stitch inserted in your skin after the test.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_KxYiotxTwgg_\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">Keep the area dry and book an appointment with your GP practice for 5-7 days to have the stitch removed.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_EoreXIHkwgg_\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">The doctor will inform you of any follow up arrangements. These samples are called biopsies.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_TfAH_BNN0C6F\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">Pleural biopsies are usually done to find the cause of a collection of fluid around the lung (pleural effusion) or other abnormality of the pleural lining.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_Bk902xGvz-Z7\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">After local anaesthesia, a sample of the pleura (lining) is taken using a special biopsy needle.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_9PBxkzygz-Z7\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">Your doctor will explain the procedure prior to it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h.p_b5PFdK2fzXaQ\" class=\"zfr3Q JYVBee\">What is a chest drain?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR\">\n<li id=\"h.p_CH-4mlEuzXaU\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">A chest drain is a thin plastic tube that is inserted into the pleural cavity (space between lung and chest wall).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h.p_NKU8t5wozXaU\" class=\"zfr3Q JYVBee\">Why do you need a chest drain?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR\">\n<li id=\"h.p_H5IghQbYzXaV\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">Because your Chest X-Ray has shown signs of fluid or infection or air in the pleural space that needs to be drained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h.p_dFh_kZ_GzXaV\" class=\"zfr3Q JYVBee\">How is it inserted?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR\">\n<li id=\"h.p_-XWAoh9HzXaV\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You will be assessed by a Respiratory doctor.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_BMMF4q-fzXaW\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You may require an ultrasound scan\/sonogram (involves applying gel on your chest and using a hand-held device to roll over your chest; similar to a baby scan or heart scan).<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_NhGWL-AQzXaW\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You will be asked to sit upright (figure on next page) or lie on your side.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_kRiP9OCVzXaW\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">After cleaning the skin, local anaesthetic will be given to numb the area.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_As_Oq54lzXaX\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You will feel some pressure and tugging but no pain.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_4h-husP3zXaX\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">A tube will be inserted with a suture to keep it in place.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_vDalysj0zXaY\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">The tube will get connected to a bottle to drain the fluid or air.<\/li>\n<li id=\"h.p_FXiQZCto0shc\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">There may be some pain afterwards, but this will ease with analgesics (pain relief medication.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h.p_vguTccDEzXaZ\" class=\"zfr3Q JYVBee\">Consent<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR\">\n<li id=\"h.p_GUpCDOPizXae\" class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d\">You will be asked to sign a consent form prior to the procedures.
