For physician associate students

Welcome

  • We are delighted to have you here and hope your time with us is educational and fun.
  • You may even decide to pursue Respiratory Medicine as a career (clearly the best specialty).

Introductory document for new PA students

  • Welcome to the Respiratory Team and we hope you enjoy your four weeks with us.
  • “In-patients” are looked after in Ward 107, “out-patients” in Clinic C.
  • Dr Dempsey is your Educational Supervisor, although as you will spot in the attached timetable we have a Consultant on Call for a week at a time (24/7, Mon 09.00 to Mon 09.00) in Ward 107 (called Consultant of Week A).
  • In addition we have a Consultant who takes referrals and sees patients on wards outwith Ward 107 (Mon 09.00-17.000), called COW B.
  • We have several consultants.
  • If Dr Dempsey is at work (remembering he is sometimes on leave) then he is very happy to meet you for an introductory chat in his office which is at the back of Clinic C, at 8.50am on the first day of your attachment, e-mail him via his secretary (hazel.mccartney@nhs.net) to arrange a meeting. At 09.00 the best place to start is Ward 107 on the first day of your attachment and introduce yourself to the Consultant of the Week A and colleagues on the team.
  • We do have Physician Associates working on Ward 107 so clearly it makes sense to introduce yourself to them early in your attachment and the team in Ward 107 will show you where to find them.
  • Although a timetable will be sent to you by email, feel free to use your common sense and initiative if there are any educational opportunities that you wish to particularly pursue. We have clinics most days, both morning and afternoon and you are very welcome to come down to Clinic C if the Ward is quiet, introduce yourself to the Nursing and Medical staff and attend any of our general or more sub-specialist clinics.
  • Clinic C reception team will also know when Respiratory Clinics are and who is present.
  • You will have various forms that need filled out and signed electronically. If Dr Dempsey is on call e.g he is COW-A or COW-B he can help you with these. If he is away then ask whoever is COW-A or COW-B to help you. It makes sense to get the forms filled in by colleagues who have seen you in action!
  • If you have any questions or concerns then contact Dr Dempsey’s secretary (hazel.mccartney@nhs.net).

Best of luck and we hope you learn a lot!
